Joining Second Stage as a staff member means joining a team of passionate theater makers that put on up to twelve student productions a semester. This is no small time commitment: staff members help out at (and lead) every strike, set up risers for every production, meet weekly to discuss show budgets and designs, pick out the next season of productions, and meet frequently with designers to help facilitate in the creation of student theater.
This is not a creative position. While many of us are designers, directors, writers, and actors, working on Second Stage is primarily an administrative position. Our creative work on individual shows is unrelated to our work on staff. Still, being on staff is a really fun and gratifying role, and it’s rare to get such an educational opportunity at any school. If you’re interested in working at a theater company after Wesleyan, Second Stage offers valuable insight into how such a company may operate.
This is a volunteer position to help other students create theater. While staff members commit much of their time to be on staff, the ultimate result is successfully (most of the time!) putting up numerous theatrical productions. This is a position of power, but we really just want to help students realize their theatrical dreams when they have the opportunity to at college and prepare for the future beyond.
