Jess, newly discharged from three tours in Afghanistan, returns to her Florida hometown. She brings with her not only memories of combat, but painful third- degree burns that have left her physically and emotionally scarred. There is Kacie, Jess’ sister, who tries hard for a smile, and Kacie’s boyfriend, Kelvin, who is more or less satisfied all the time. And then there is Stevie, who works the register at the convenience store, and despite meaning well and having a an irresistible charm, never actually knows what to say. Woven through all of this are Jess’ VR (virtual reality) video game therapy sessions, in which she creates a world where she is totally mobile, free of her PTSD, and without chronic pain. As Jess advances farther in the game, she begins to restore her relationships, her life and, slowly, herself.
